ICL use Michael to coach India’s brightest talent

World Crickets' - newest 20/20 tournament, the Indian Cricket League, launched their first series in November 2007.

The Indian Cricket League's aim was to develop the brightest stars who had joined the new 20/20 competition. The "ICL" understood the importance of recruiting the best coaches in the world to help their players improve their results and lift the standard of their competition.

Michael's experience comes to the fore

Subsequent to having played with one of the most successful sporting teams in history (the Australian Cricket Team), and helping to coach Tasmania to its first one day competition win in 27 years and it's first Pura Cup win ever, the "ICL" recognized they were recruiting a coach with a proven history of winning competitions.

Michael's experience with some of the most successful cricket teams in the world has helped him understand the key drivers of team and individual performance.

Empowering the players and creating engagement

As head coach of the Chennai Superstars, Michael recognized the most important stage in engaging players initially was to get them to establish their outcome goals - what it was they wanted to achieve from the 4-week competition.

There are two key benefits of letting the players drive the vision. Firstly, it allows the players to take ownership and control of their environment, and secondly it allows the coach to hold the players accountable to the agreed standards and commitment levels.

Providing the framework and creating industry leading  standards

Once the outcome goals were established, Michael had the team break down the task into key areas and create small, tangible targets- these formed the basis of the key performance indicators and the benchmarks the players would be assessed on.

Michael then created a monitoring/ assessment system so that the players could understand what areas they performed well in, and what areas required improvement.

Selection/recruitment policy

Developing a talent identification and recruitment policy was paramount to helping the Chennai Superstar's players understand how they could gain selection into various positions and roles within the organization. It also helps to clarify what it is you are asking of your employees/ players and provides consistency. The selection/ recruitment policy was then aligned to the team's objectives.

Creating dynamic organisational culture

The key to michael's success was to create an environment in which the players enjoyed themselves, became involved with team activities, and learned how to find solutions to obstacles that they encountered.

Creating reward/ recognition programs, socialisation activities, leadership opportunities and creating norms and values were the key areas to build a great organisational culture within the chennai superstars.

Developing high quality skills

Michael knew the two keys in building high quality skills for his players was  for them to understand the physical skills and the standards required for them to fulfill their role within the team, and to achieve the goals they had set. Then, in conjunction with his players, Michael helped create action plans that allowed them to practice the skills that would create optimal improvement for the team and themselves.
