Well it didn't take long for me to pen my first blog about cricket. Upon my return from India coaching the Chennai Superstars- two topics sit in the forefront of my mind. The topicsĀ have particular importance and relevance to me at the moment and hopefully they will have the same to our mbbp visitors who are serious about achieving performance from their companies and employees.
The first is the continued dominance of the Australian Cricket Team. After the "Aussies" recent Test loss against India many experts are saying that they have lost their aura. This may be the case but the important question is if and when they can develop the quality of players and leaders that have helped propel them to be one of the most successful cricket teams of all time.
It is always hard to replace greats such as Warne, Gilchrist and McGrath etc but can they continue to develop and find new players that will assert their brilliance on the world cricket stage.
To dominate world cricket for over 15 years takes more than great players, it takes great systems and great leaders. Can Cricket Australia continue to create and implement quality selection policies, player development and identification programs and an environment that helps create top leadership and management from it's players? It is my belief that whilst Australia is going through a transition period they still lead world cricket in many of the areas I have listed above.
The second topic revolves around employee commitment to everything that groups discuss including goals, standards and visions.
Many times during my career have I been part of pre season planning sessions or team meetings. In fact nearly every pre season planning I have been a part of is very similar in content. The fact is most teams talk about the same things. The single biggest difference between the great and average teams I have played with is that the best ones find ways of committing and implementing the things they talk about.
Once again it all comes back to building and creating an environment that will help instill and create confidence, motivation and commitment to everything the group would like to achieve . Of course this will not happen overnight. It will take some time before employees or players can reach the highest standards or improve their performance.
Will this be the case for the new Aussie team?
