The Importance of Coaching

How much influence does a coach have? How can they benefit me? In what circumstances is it best to use one?

The above questions can only be answered firstly by reflecting on your own personal circumstance and secondly by understanding the skills the coach brings to the table.

Some questions you might need to ask yourself:

  • Am I achieving my goals
  • What obstacles am I encountering
  • What areas do I need to improve
  • Am I assessing my situation honestly

Some questions for your coach:

  • What coaching experience have they had?
  • What have their results been?
  • What coaching methods do they use?
  • How do they intend to help you?

Traits of good coaches:

  • They help you establish clear action plans
  • They hold you accountable for your results and behaviors
  • They have a good understanding of what you are trying to achieve and how you go about it
  • They are knowledgeable in coaching and performance concepts

I have continually been amazed throughout my career the difference a good coach can make. Employees or players within a team respond differently when placed in different environments so it becomes paramount for coaches provide a working relationship where the goal is to help build confidence, motivation, skills and strategies of the employee.
